Biotop is the second album by German electronic musician Asmus Tietchens, released in 1981 on Sky Records. Departing from the musical style of the musician's debut album Nachtstucke (1980), Biotop contains sixteen short electronic pop tracks that are characterised by their immediate nature but unusual synth lines, tones and melodies.
Listen free to Asmus Tietchens – Biotop (In die Zukunft, Miss Ann Trope and more). In retrospect, we might suspect that Asmus Tietchens was deliberately leading us up the garden path with the discordant pseudo-pop of his early musical productions. Four albums between 1981-1983 and a handful of individual pieces comprise the "Zeitzeichen" (time signal) phase which, in the words of their creator, was characterized by the implementation of "rhythmic-harmonic set pieces and gaudy record sleeves
1981's Biotop was only his second LP after 15 years of perfecting his craft, and should be right on time for folks down with futuristic pop like Cluster or Kraftwerk. Die Stadt is presently in the process of releasing all of Tietchens' early material in a series of 18 CDs, of which Biotop is the second. Of all the archival electronic recordings awaiting reissue, Tietchens' work on Sky is some of the most necessary, and consistently enjoyable.
