This series of tapes brings Garcia a few steps closer to all of us. Originally the tapes were to be part of McNally's doctoral dissertation on a Jack Kerouac biography. This is a hard book to rate because of the personal contents and how it's presented. And with Garcia's passing these intimate conversations are probably as close as any of us will ever get to understanding Jerry Garcia. This is an interesting, informative, and important look into Garcia through a number of years. Not just another book to tie into the 50th Anniversary of the band, this book should be on your shelf of Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia books, and included with other good books on Garcia when putting together a picture of who he was.
Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his work as the lead guitarist and as a vocalist with the band Grateful Dead, which came to prominence during the counterculture era in the 1960s.
