There is an unforgiving judge whose silence is a threat to all. To survive time entails the depth of a respect that can only be earned. The iron fist of 25 years takes no toll on the beast of evolving beauty known as Meshuggah. Take evolving with a grain of salt: Since 1989, the band has used every cement-crushing breakdown to wrap around a throbbing bass, creating a signature pulse that will forever be Meshuggah.
Meshuggah (/məˈʃʊɡə/) is a Swedish extreme metal band from Umeå, formed in 1987. Those who haven't been following extreme metal or Meshuggah in particular will find I an excellent introduction. It may only be an EP, but it's an ambitious one that packs a dizzying array of changes and styles in its single epic 21-minute track. Over a bed of heavy thrash metal sludge comes a runaway train of spidery jazz riffs, eerie doom-laden atmospherics, and enough quick turns and hiccupping changes to fill a few albums.
I I - this fractal illusion burning away all structure toward the obscene I - to cleanse, to purge, to breach eternity and smother all life Blind - these mortal men of clay, divine and dying in their harnessed form I - this furnace of limitless hate. The pendulum swings semi-attached to the centre of all I drug these minds into ruin and contempt - the acid smoke of burning souls. What is true? Not destined for incarceration. I crave my nothingness. This illness that they whisper of, is that what makes me fail?

This was my first Meshuggah album. I actually got it a month or so after it came out when I unintentionally got caught in the middle of all the hype that was going on about this record. Most of the people that I’ve talked to have said that ObZen is Meshuggah’s best album; which is a statement that I fully agree with. There is one problem I have with this album and Meshuggah in general, and that is that they’ve been doing the same exact thing for almost 20 years
