A male Golden-crowned Kinglet with its' crest fully raised. A fairly common year-round resident of our forests here in New Brunswick. These birds are so tiny and hyperactive that they are very difficult to photograph well. Golden-crowns stay with us year-round while Ruby-crowns migrate south for the winter. They are among the smallest of North American songbirds. animeruler100 Featured By Owner Apr 23, 2010 Hobbyist Traditional Artist. Loving the bird photography.

Ruby-crowned kinglet (Regulus calendula) vs Golden-crowned kinglet (Regulus satrapa). Bird banding at Rushton Woods Preserve, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. So I’m painting a few little portraits of species that I think will be popular with my fellow bird nerds, like this tiny golden crowned kinglet. There are so many of them in this neck of the woods. gcki kinglet golden-crowned kinglet golden crowned kinglet bird painting artist art watercolor sketch paint illustrator illustration.

Ruby-crowned kinglet can reach . to . inches in length and . ounces of weight. Ruby-crowned kinglet has grayish green backs, dark-colored wings covered with two white bars and incomplete white rings around eyes. Under parts are olive to yellowish-brown in color. Males have ruby-red (or rarely yellow-orange) patch that is normally hidden on top of the head. Exposed patch is a symbol of excitement or agitation. Latin name of the ruby-crowned kinglet is "Regulus calendula". Word "regulus" means "small king"

Male Ruby-crowned Kinglets sing a jumbled but distinctive song that builds to an incredibly loud ending when you consider how small these birds are. The song lasts about 5 seconds. It starts with soft, high notes that accelerate into a musical twittering, and then abruptly shifts into a loud series of 2- or 3-parted notes. The most common kinglet call is a harsh, fast, two-parted scold. They may also give a long, chattering series of short notes. Females sometimes do this as the male sings; females also use it as an alarm call.
