Size MP3 album: 1572 mb. | Size FLAC album: 1636 mb.

Chet Atkins in Three Dimensions is the fifth studio album recorded by American guitarist Chet Atkins. The recording mixes unique arrangements of traditional tunes, pop songs and classical arrangements (hence the three dimensions of the title). Atkins stated in his 1974 autobiography that this album was the first time he strayed away from country, even though he had been fired numerous times from various radio shows for "not sounding country enough".

In his second 12" album, the young master guitarist tries to transcend categories and stereotypes, dividing the album into three distinct sections. The first deals with sometimes surprising treatments of four folk tunes; "Arkansaw Traveler" is a particularly amazing tour de force that takes us to other strange places before reaching the tune. Part two is devoted to pop songs, again in varied treatments.

Evidently the idea behind this album was that Chet had assembled three sets of four songs each, touching on the folk tradition (from four different countries), the popular tradition, and (gasp!) the classical tradition. The tracks run in thematic order, beginning with the folk selections, which are uniformly excellent. From the getgo this album leaps out of the speakers, and though my "electronically reprocessed" version has a relatively high noise floor, the guitar just keeps stealing the show. Chet is one of the few guitarists who can pull off a collection of solo performances that is consistently engaging for the duration. His technical expertise is astonishing, and several tracks reveal surprising quirks or unique arrangements. His mellow rendition of "Londonderry Air" (or the "Danny Boy" melody, as most people probably know it), is breathtaking. The second set of tunes, or the "popular" ones, are equally adept, particularly on "Little Rock Getaway." The only lackluster moment occurs when he switches over to classical, with "Minuet," the only song on the album on which Chet plays a classical guitar. However, the innovative passages and entertaining qualities return with the remainder of the classical set, culminating in an excellent interpretation of the "Minute Waltz." All in all, this album is an amazing early work by a guitar trailblazer who was just getting started.

Amazing guitar playing. Cool sound. Arkansas traveller is my favorite song, it can really take you to the place that Atkins had in mind, I assume it was Arkansas.
