Star of the County Down" is an Irish ballad set near Banbridge in County Down, in Northern Ireland. The words are by Cathal McGarvey (1866–1927) from Ramelton, County Donegal. The tune is similar to several other works, especially that of the English "Dives and Lazarus", also called "Kingsfold", well known from several popular hymns. The melody was also used in an Irish folk song called "My Love Nell"

The Flower of the County Down" is the original version of "The Star of the County Down". In Banbridge town, in the County Down On an evening of July Down a lonely street came a girl so neat And I smiled when she passed me by. She looked so bright with a step as light As the lep of a spring-time hare An' I closed my eyes in a wild surprise To make sure I was really there.

Near Banbridge Town in the County Down One morning last July A boreen green came a sweet colleen And she smiled as she passed me by. She looked so sweet from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut brown hair Such a coaxing elf, sure I shook myself For to see I was really there. From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay and From Galway to Dublin Town No maid I've seen like the brown colleen That I met in the County Down

Near Banbridge Town in the County Down, One morning last July, Down a boreen green came a sweet cailín And she smiled as she passed me by. She looked so sweet from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut brown hair. Such a winsome elf, sure I shook myself For to see I was really there. From Bantry Bay up to Derry's Quay, From Galway to Dublin Town, No maid I've seen like the fair cailín That I met in the County Down. Til a smiling bride, by my own fireside, Sits the star of the County Down. Other Irish Folk Songs Other Traditional Folk Songs.
