Calla - Strength In Numbers album
Those who've ridden through the night-cloaked landscapes of Calla's last four albums will find themselves in familiar territory on Strength in Numbers. A few key things have changed, though. The electronic bells and whistles (samplers and the like) have been pushed to the backburner, and the angular, Interpol-influenced guitar work of Collisions has been, for the most part, discarded. And in this case, change is good - Strength in Numbers is one of Calla's least derivative, most developed albums to date. And yes, it's an intense listen.

Strength in Numbers (2007). The audio cassette was a format used from the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl, an album may be recorded in a recording studio, in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately.
On "Strength In Numbers" Calla firmly establish themselves as the vein-ripped kings of angst-ridden beauty. It's all about the atmosphere, the mood, the natural ability to capture and conceptualize the deepest, darkest emotions; and lovingly, achingly transform them into an irrepressible work that celebrates the hypnotic allure of despondence-as-art. So imagine my surprise when I recently heard that Calla had issued a new album in February, 2007, it was the first I had heard about it, and an unusually quick follow-up to their previous album. Strength In Numbers" (13 tracks, 53 mi. starts off very promisingly with a blazing "Sanctify", one of their best tracks ever in my opinion, with a sound reminiscent of the Secret Machines, with thundering drums and a searing guitar solo (which is unusual for Calla).
And in this case, change is good - Strength in Numbers is one of Calla's least derivative, most developed albums to date. Moments like these are lacking halfway through the album, though; Valle's cracked vocals, Pete Gannon's greasy guitar work, and Wayne Magruder's inexorable percussion grow nigh on lugubrious once "Le Gusta el Fuego" rolls around. These are unflinching urban sketches of love gone awry, and Calla does them justice.
