Art Farmer Quintet - The Time And The Place album
The Time and the Place is an album by Art Farmer's Quintet recorded in 1967 and originally released on the Columbia label. Although originally promoted as a live album the tracks were actually recorded in the studio and audience overdubbed. In 2007, Mosaic Records released the original live set from the original three-track recordings as the title The Time and the Place: The Lost Concert.
The Art Farmer Quintet was seven months old at the time of this recording. The Time And The Place. The Shadow Of Your Smile.
The Art Farmer Quintet Plays the Great Jazz Hits (1967). The Time and the Place (Columbia, 1967). Sideman with Milt Jackson. It was adopted by the industry as a standard format for the album. Apart from relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound capability, the term album had been carried forward from the early nineteenth century when it had been used for collections of short pieces of music.
Two very different records by Art Farmer are combined on this Collectables CD reissue. Art Farmer enjoyed playing pieces with strong melodies, and the original concept of Baroque Sketches was to adapt the music of Johann Sebastian Bach into a jazz setting. The Art Farmer Quintet are featured in a 1967 concert at the Museum of Modern Art in the second half of the disc, released originally as The Time and the Place.

Columbia Records pulled a fast one in 1967, releasing a studio album with dubbed applause called The Time and the Place and calling it a live record of a concert by the Art Farmer Quintet at the Museum of Modern Art. This Mosaic Single CD gives us the actual MoMA concert, recorded in 1966. By this time, Farmer was playing flugelhorn exclusively and earlier in the decade had been exploring his lyrical side in bands with Jim Hall and Steve Kuhn.
