The music of Canterbury duo Ultramarine resists easy classification, drawing as it does from electronica, ambient, techno, and folk as well as eclectic '70s Canterbury prog rock artists such as the Soft Machine, Caravan, and Robert Wyatt (the latter of whom occasionally performed live with the group and appeared on their 1993 album, United Kingdoms).

7th Plain remix, more luke slater magic. wasting away in style.
whoah I just listened to it on deezer !! It is so tastefulI especially like the slater's 7th plain rework :)
On the remixes of HYMN, µ-Ziq takes the basic idea and twists it around until it goes off in its own harmonic -- and occasionally discordant -- direction. Luke Slater fills out the sound with elongated layers for a much more moody piece of work. Mekon's Sugar J gives a bass-heavy mix, but the track itself sounds particularly empty. Better yet is Mouse on Mars' version, which has a sweet, lullaby quality. And when Kevin Ayers gets a chance to reprise the vocals to his own song, it has a much different feel than David McAlmont's -- slightly warmer, but it stands up admirably, at least equaling if not surpassing the original.
one life
There's no way around it: HYMN is a great track. It merges Ultramarine's love of English folk with their more electronic direction in a cohesive whole, and David McAlmont's vocals soar all over it. As for the other tracks, "Stranger to Wack" offers a nod towards hip-hop, even if it never quite goes there, while "Gated Latin" has that odd horn. "Winding Rhodes" lays on the resonant percussion as a jazzy theme bloops overhead. Good, but the title track takes the prize.
The great piece in this remix ep is the Kevin Ayers cover of his own composition. Yes, David McAlmond can be an impressive vocalist, but the subdued, gentle, whispered, just beautiful performance by Kevin Ayers really fits the song, and the mix of weird 808 electronica with pastoral sounds is the best Ultramarine had in those years, among with Robert Wyatt in "Kingdom". Ultramarine were really unique. They had a vision and regretfully no one understood it at the time.
