Diva, DIVA - No Man's Band, Sherrie Maricle And The Diva Jazz Orchestra.

DIVA has long been a swinging unit, and Maricle has a reputation for seeking out the top female players for her "No Man's Band," many of whom have graduated and become prominent leaders themselves. Without surprise, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra plays Mandel's charts with the finesse of veterans who have played them night after night for years, the ensembles are flawless, and there are too many outstanding soloists to list.

In May, 2010, legendary composer/arranger Johnny Mandel performed three evenings with the all-female DIVA Jazz Orchestra at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, immaculately preserved in this release. Vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway adds her note-perfect, pure alto voice to Mandel's arrangements of the Billie Holiday classics "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" and "'T'Ain't Nobody's Business," in addition to providing her own piano accompaniment to the ballad "Where Do You Start?," on which Mandel collaborated with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman.

Mandel's most recent project is a CD called Johnny Mandel, A Man and His Music, featuring The DIVA Jazz Orchestra and vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway, recorded live at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in May 2010, released by Arbors Records in March 2011.
