The Beach Boys - Friends / Little Bird album
Released in late June 1968, 'Friends' found the Beach Boys settling in after the many conflicts that derailed the making of their epic 'Smile' album. Smiley Smile' came first, but it was more of a bunt than a grand slam. With 'Friends,' the group crafted an inviting album full of terrific songs. Sessions for the record had started in February at Wilson's home studio. Over the next few months, the band worked on the songs. The jaunty 'Little Bird' is Dennis' first real gem. Its arrangement and structure are fairly sophisticated this early in his songwriting game. Apparently he learned a lot from his older brother. His other contribution to 'Friends,' the hauntingly beautiful 'Be Still,' ranks as one of the Beach Boys' most vulnerable tracks. Busy Doin Nothin' basically describes a day in the life of Brian Wilson in 1968, with whimsical and odd lyrics that include directions to his house, albeit from an undisclosed starting point.
The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961. Their discography from 1961 to 1984 was originally released on the vinyl format, with the 1985 album The Beach Boys being the group's first CD release. The Beach Boys' catalogue has been released on reel-to-reel, 8-track, cassette, CD, MiniDisc, digital downloads, and various streaming services.
The Beach Boys' Christmas Album is the seventh studio album by the Beach Boys, released in November 1964. it contains five original songs and seven standards on a Christmas theme. The album proved to be a long-running success during subsequent Christmas seasons, initially reaching number six in the US Billboard 200 chart in its year of release and eventually going gold. Music historian James Perone wrote that it is "regarded as one of the finest holiday albums of the rock era".
The production and harmonies remained pleasantly idiosyncratic, but there was little substance at the heart of most of the songs. The irony was that Smile had collapsed, in part, because some of the Beach Boys felt that Wilson's increasingly avant-garde leanings would lose their pop audience; yet by the time of Friends, the Beach Boys had done a pretty good job of losing most of their audience by retreating to a less experimental, more group-based approach

The Beach Boys are now so venerated that it's hard to recall a time when you risked ridicule if you admitted to being a fan. The band fell out of favour with the public in 1967. Yet after they withdrew from the Monterey festival and pulled their much-touted Smile album in the spring of 1967, the critics who had acclaimed Good Vibrations as a masterpiece just a few months earlier turned their backs on the group. The lost gem of this era was their Friends album from 1968. One estimate has its 1968 US sales at a paltry 18,000 - all of their albums prior to Pet Sounds in 1966 had sold a million. But it was a healing album for the troubled group, with a very grounded kith and kin philosophy on songs like the title song and When A Man Needs A Woman, and a gentle resignation to nature on Little Bird and Be Still (Dennis Wilson's first ever contributions).
