1) Gripper spent his younger years playing in garage punk bands, splicing together funk, disco and electro tapes, and listening to pirate soul stations and early New York mix tapes. Throw in long, late night listening sessions with John Peel and The Old Grey Whistle Test as company, and it’s no surprise that he soon embarked on an obsessive mission to collect vinyl from a diverse musical spectrum. If this is what life is like, I don't know why it wouldn't be easy. "The Interpreter" has a moody jazz trumpet to accompany the breaks, and the chanting seems to come from another world. The vocals on "Blackwater Prophet," similarly, echo in over the funk beats. Niko brings her sharp and pointed voice to "The Daddy," which has a finger-snapping stop-start soul, but it's "Zombie," with its smooth house vibe that comes to eat your brain. The breaks come fast and furious, almost slipping into the background, but a few high points pull them out: "Zero Point" has some blast of Spanish horns amongst its splattery bass, while the title track makes the melody high-pitched and slightly dreamy. The house beat returns on "I Love You," and it makes things sort of sultry. You might as well enjoy the ease while it lasts...
