David Lewiston (born 11 May 1929, London, England – died 29 May 2017, Wailuku, Hawaii, USA) was a British musician and journalist. He studied with Thomas De Hartmann, and later became a collector of the world's traditional music. He is known for his field recordings initially released on Explorer Series beginning in 1967. David Lewiston passed away in Hawaii on May 29, 2017, at the age of 88, after an extended illness. The inveterate t was among the first to release recordings as part of the Nonesuch Explorer Series, which presented indigenous music from around the world, in the late 1960s. His first recording in the series, Music from the Morning of the World, featuring field recordings from Bali, was inducted into the National Recording Registry of "culturally significant" sound recordings in 2008. David Lewiston, a self-described musical tourist who trekked around the globe over nearly half a century, recording gong ensembles in Bali, Peruvian pan pipers and chanting Tibetan monks to amass one of the world’s richest collections of international music, died May 29 at a hospice center in Wailuku, Hawaii. He was 88. He had a stroke, said Mirayam Licht, his power of attorney and a longtime friend. The British-born Mr. Lewiston was one of the most esteemed ethnomusicologists of the 20th century, although he rejected that professional label. His first album was Music From the Morning of the World - a landmark of ethnic music that in 2007 was entered by the Library of Congress into the National Recording Registry.
