Copland and the Czech Philharmonic give vivid, bracing performances of Inscape and Billy the Kid, but that is not the news here. Copland's sensitive conducting of Stravinsky's Ode and Martinu's Half-Time make these performances two of the prime attractions. Perhaps most striking of all is William Schuman's New England Triptych. Schuman's profile has nestled down under the looming figures of Copland, Barber, and Bernstein among American composers born early in the twentieth century.
