The libretto by Charles Jennens is drawn from the Bible: mostly from the Old Testament of the King James Bible, but with several psalms taken from the Book of Common Prayer the Subject excells every other Subject. The Subject is Messiah.
Though Handel intended Messiah to be a thought-provoking work performed during Easter and Lent, it was favored and performed mostly at Christmastime. But despite its popularity, there are many people who have never heard this three-act baroque masterpiece - or at least any part other than the famous "Hallelujah" Chorus. In an effort to introduce you to Handel's somewhat overwhelming classical oratorio, we've put together a few intriguing and fantastic excerpts. 01. of 07. "Comfort Ye" & "Every Valley"
