About Reckoning . This live album features acoustic highlights from shows in New York and San Francisco that were the basis for the band’s Dead Ahead video. As in the early Seventies, the Dead played an acoustic set before their standard two-set format. There’s a combination of old, traditional numbers, fun covers and folksier elements from the Dead’s catalog, making it arguably the band’s best Eighties release.

In the fall of 1980, the Grateful Dead played a series of shows at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco and Radio City Music Hall in New York City (venues considerably smaller than they had grown accustomed to) for the purpose of filming and recording. The group opened these special concerts with a special acoustic set at which Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir played acoustic guitars, Brent Mydland played piano, and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart played reduced kits. Phil Lesh stuck to his electric bass, but at a modest volume. Also special was the set list, as demonstrated by the track.
When the Grateful Dead played the series of autumn 1980 shows that were captured on Reckoning, they were working with a new lease on life in more ways than one. Not only did they have a new member who’d been giving them a boost of energy, the band were also touring on the heels of that great rarity in the Grateful Dead discography, a strong studio album. They were also returning to their roots by opening each show with an acoustic set that harkened back to their humble jug-band beginnings. In April of 1979, 26-year-old Brent Mydland arrived as a replacement for both keyboardist Keith Godchaux.
