Maupin hasn't been heard from as a leader since 1998 on his fine, funky, Driving While Black. That doesn't mean he hasn't been busy; he's played on records by Chick Corea, the Headhunters, George Cables, Victor Bailey, David Arnay, Mike Clark, and others. He was also part of DJ and producer Carl Craig's revolutionary Detroit Experiment. Penumbra is all his, however, and aside from Jewel in the Lotus, it may be the finest outing in his catalog as a leader. Maupin plays his usual array of instruments – tenor, soprano, flute, bass clarinet, and piano.

Bennie Maupin's first album in eight years is called Penumbra, and there are just so many reasons why this title is completely perfect. Firstly, there's that sound: the bass clarinet; the smoky, murky, deep and dark bass clarinet; the sound of furtive movements in the shadows, subterranean, lurking. Since then he's recorded rarely as a leader: a few albums in the '70s, 1998's Driving While Black - and now Penumbra. Finally, it seems, Maupin is summoning up the gravitas we've hoped for all these years - assuming his rightful position as the pre-eminent bass clarinettist in contemporary jazz, stepping out of the shadow cast by his old teacher, Eric Dolphy

Bennie Maupin is best known for his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis’ classic "Bitches Brew" album, as well as other Miles Davis recordings such as, "Big Fun" "Jack Johnson," and "On the Corner. He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock’s seminal band The Headhunters, as well as a performer and composer in Hancock’s influential Mwandishi band. Born in 1940, Maupin started playing clarinet, later adding saxophone, flute and, most notably, the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of woodwind instruments.
