Eric Vloeimans is such a gifted stylist for a relatively young man. Vloeimans can dazzle with speed and articulation yet one of his major attributes is his willingness to blend traditional "jazz" elements with an occasional off-center approach. Bitches and Fairy Tales is a storybook of sorts, as told through the mighty trumpet of Mr. Vloeimans. Highly Recommended 1/2. Hein Van de Geyn: Eric Vloeimans and Challenge have been together since the label started in 1994. I’ve always had a soft spot for Eric because of his individuality, great sound, spontaneity and adventurous approach to music. You could never pigeonhole Eric; he’s too inside to be an outside player, and too outside to be in. Eric just plays music in the most open-minded way. Good compositions, fine band, good vibes, great expression and connection to the public, that’s how Eric has always struck m. " on the verge of becoming an important European player. Featuring pointillistic compositions accented by slippery diminished runs, Bitches and Fairy Tales is a nice drink of fuzzy, straight-ahead jazz with Vloeimans often adding a little avant-garde triple sec into the mix. While comparable to Marsalis in his use of operatic bent tones punctuated by the occasional growl, Vloeimans more often settles into his warm, foggy tone like another trumpeter who had an affinity for the Netherlands, Chet Baker. Backing Vloeimans on piano is the Bill Evans-influenced Brit John Taylor. Joey Baron on drums and Marc Johnson on bass round out the group.

Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans is a warm-toned modernist whose inside-outside trajectories unfurl with brassy abandon. Recorded in New York with the superb backing of pianist John Taylor, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, Vloeimans’ program of striking originals shuttles freely across a broad spectrum of moods, sometimes, as in the case of Midnight Child, within the compass of a single track.
