The live setting of this album allows Ade and his band to stretch out rapturously in a way not possible when making a ten-track album for first-world consumption, and the result is entirely winning. Some listeners may lose patience with the long intros and drum showcases, but those who persevere will be well rewarded. Highlights include the lush and gorgeous "Kira Kira" and the guitar-driven "Ase.

LIVE LIVE JUJU, a all-digital 1987 recording, is the first true document of Nigeria's juju king at his vibrant best. Since King Sunny Ade's American debut in 1983, African music has exerted a profound influence on pop music. Artists such as Brian Eno, David Byrne, Paul Simon, and Peter Gabriel have incorporated its rhythms and structures into their own music. In 1987, Ade returned to the Americas after a three-year absence and besides touring extensively in North America, he headlined the Free Jazz Festival in Brazil and Independence Day celebrations in Nigeria. King Sunny Ade and His African Beats probably needs no introduction. This live performance of his North American tour brings the rhythmic sounds and electric guitars of Nigerian Juju music to your enjoyment. I first heard this on tape in the late 80's, at the recommendation of a friend who owned a Reggae music store.
