VNV Nation needs no introduction here. With "Of Faith Power And Glory" they are releasing their seventh studio album, if, for a moment, we do not consider the rerelease of "Advance And Follow". The band has built themselves a solid reputation with their outstanding live performances and their heroic electro that does not shy away from the big questions in life. The album opens with a short instrumental track, "Pro Victoria", that must be their most bombastic and.

Thank you Ronan and Mark. VNV Nation is not content to rest on their laurels, again, and Of Faith, Power and Glory is proof They all grab your soul, refuse to let go, and take you to a different, sometimes better, place.

[RANT]"This cover is part of our commitment to the environment. Only 100% post consumer recycled paper, vegetable based inks and water based coatings are used."Cute, but apparently nobody thought of the standard jewel case format physical size when producing this...doesn't fit inside industry standard CD housing/mass storage cases....bleh.So, in order for this to fit in alongside all my other normally-sized VNV Nation stuff, I've had to excise the liner notes, stick them in a standard jewel case, print an aftermarket tray card (with NON "vegetable based inks" HAHAHAHA!!!) on a piece of paper that presumably caused a tree to be cut down, so I can read what the f___ this release is from the side, and CHUCK this "commitment to the environment" packaging in a cardboard box along with all my other as(s)ininely-sized boxes (I'm looking at YOU "Reformation"!!!).The fact that I've had to utilize a jewel case to store this product effectively and efficiently (along with 3000+ of it's compatriots) TOTALLY DEFEATS this supposed "commitment" :)There's "thinking outside the box" (if you'll pardon the somewhat hilarious pun), and there's downright stupidity because somebody thought it was cute.GOD I wish these "environmentalists" would THINK every once in a while :)Props to GoHastings.com for FINALLY getting the price of this used disc down out of the clouds 01/30/15.NO PROPS to VNV for NOT having this disc when I saw them at Belly Up, Solana Beach, CA April 2, 2014.[As a hilarious aside, I bought the normally-sized Digipaks for "Transnational" and "Automatic" April 2, 2014, and they're now resting peacefully, without me having to reinvent the wheel/jewel case, alongside 3000+ of their normal-case-sized brethren :) ][/ENDRANT]

"Of Faith Power And Glory" is, as the title already suggests, no exception to this approach. The album opens with a short instrumental track, "Pro Victoria", that must be their most bombastic and martial intro so far. This is followed by nine tracks and some 50 minutes of excellent music. Songs like "Sentinel" and "Where There Is Light" are incredibly uplifting and heroic. Tracks like "The Great Divide" and "Ghost" on the other hand will stimulate introspection. Both music and lyrics manage to deal with themes such as mortality and transience in an incomparable way. Luckily there are also tracks that might well become popular on the dancefloors this summer. Other than aforementioned "Sentinel" the track "Art Of Conflict" just _pounds_ away. And songs like "Defiant" and "Verum Æternus" outright rock, if only for the way the drums are employed. And of course there is the obligatory sentimental ballad, "From My Hands", which might well be their best so far. As always with VNV Nation, I don't find them melodramatic. The lyrics are simply too well thought out and too honest for that. Recognisable, painful and incredibly beautiful. Again VNV Nation manages to touch on a wide range of emotions in one single album; aggression, heroic sentiments, euphoria, but also introspection and intense grief. After giving this album a couple of spins I am completely sold. They remain an incredible band and this album reminds me why that was. For me it ranks right up there with my other personal favourite, "Futureperfect". Fans can purchase this one blindly. - Originally written for the Dutch weblog IkEcht, English translation by the author.
