Ariel Kalma & Richard Tinti - Osmose album
Ariel Kalma's magical and weird Osmose originally released in 1978 masterfully matches Richard Tinti's rainforest field recordings with Ariel's left field minimalist compositional ideas. Rather than simply relying on the rainforest sounds providing a pleasant backdrop to the drones, the drones interplay with the pitches of the natural sounds to create melancholic, Popol Vuh like grandeurs. The album has a progression that's almost a story in toto, where the next rise is finally crossed revealing the huge, seemingly impenetrable expanse of lush greens. The expanse is then explored with wide eyed wonder until the guide dies and the companions start succumbing to fever, ague, snakes and unseen primitives at home in the shadows.

Creation of Osmose: Ariel Kalma was recommended to Richard Tinti who had just come back from Borneo with hours of music of the rainforest: ambiences in high quality recordings. To their amazement, birds and keyboards, flutes and crickets, saxophones and frogs, war drums and (vintage) drum machines had much in common in terms of pitch, melodies, rhythms, effects. Feedback on YouTube for the track 'Planet Air': just wanted to let you know that OSMOSE is incredible! Thank you for making music! The album has a progression that's almost a story in toto, where the next rise is finally crossed revealing the huge, seemingly impenetrable expanse of lush greens.

NotesPackaged in a gatefold sleeve with the following text on the back cover:
"When forest and music meet.
Richard TINTI travelled to Borneó and recorded the sound of the forest. When Ariel KALMA listened to it, he could hear his melodies sung by the birds, even sometimes in the very keys he uses… Natural harmony and inspiration seems to flow from the same spring [Mixed at the Groupe of Research in Music (GRM), a department of french National Audiovisual Institute (INA)]; to tune, record, mix the different element together; to the animals and athmosphere [sic] of the jungle, answered generators, flutes, saxophones, bird-calls, synthesizers, organs; thus two records got produced:
- Music and forest (record A)
- Forest, synthetic sounds, bird calls (record R)
Sometimes it is hard to distinguish what is bird, cricket or generators. Some surprises also occured, like this fly coming down the mikes just that the end of "Planet-Air" …
Warning ! Record R being an exeptionnaly [sic] long record and the grooves extreme fine, please be careful to use a good stylus not to lift the arm during audition."
