Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" is a song written by Canadian musician Neil Young. Combined with its acoustic counterpart "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)", it bookends Young's 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. The song was inspired by electropunk group Devo, the rise of punk and what Young viewed as his own growing irrelevance " and the title phrase of the album, "rust never sleeps" on which it was featured sprang from Young's encounters with Devo and in particular Mark.

When something/somebody fades away, it means that they once had a presence but then their importance/what they "give" gradually diminishes. The term is originally from a Neil Young song. The line has been used by Johnny Rotton and Kurt Cobain since then - Its better to burn out than to fade away - in the next verse neil replaces fade away with rust. As far as Neil, Johnny and Kurt saw it, burning out would be exiting the scene instantly in the apex of success, whereas to fade away would be a gradual fall from glory. 2. k views · View 13 Upvoters

Basically its like saying its better to be like a bright torch that shoots into the sky and lights it up super bright but fades away quick, rather than a dull candle that lasts for years.
