It was recorded live on tour in 1975 and features "The Funkettes" - Lorraine Feather and Jana King. Early pressings of the album (including record-club pressings) simply state the band's name as "Grand Funk" on the front cover and spine, but have the full name on the record labels.

Here’s how Grand Funk Railroad began: Guitarist Mark Farner and drummer Don Brewer played in Terry Knight’s band, Terry Knight and the Pack. They had some regional success in Michigan, but nothing huge. Knight would later become their manipulative ngali. Related: Read part one of our interview with Farner. These two other players were married. When we got home, the two guys that were married, their wives were gonna divorce them and the band broke up. We got all these gigs coming up and now we don’t have a band. I said, ‘We ought just do a three-piece’ and Don said, ‘Do you think we can?’

Having seen this band for the first time in the summer of '69, before their first Atlanta Pop Festival appearance, and many, many times afterwards, I feel I have a pretty good body of work from which to form an opinion on GFRs live performances. Any fan of their early, Terry Knight produced, live shows know that they were powerful events. I don't think it's an over statement to say that Live Album is as good a representation of the raw power and talent that GFR possessed, as any, and, arguably, the best.

com/Grand Funk (album). Grand Funk Railroad (also known as Grand Funk) is an American blues rock band that was highly popular during the 1970s, touring extensively and playing to packed arenas worldwide. David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine once said, "You cannot talk about rock in the 1970s without talking about Grand Funk Railroad!" Known for their crowd-pleasing arena rock style, the band was well-regarded by audiences despite a relative lack of critical acclaim.

Out of the gate, Grand Funk enjoyed large audiences and dedicated fans who bought up their brand of no frills rock and roll. In 1970, they had their first brush with pop success when their single "Closer to Home" hit the Top 30. Fast forward a few years to find the band sitting at the very top of the singles charts with their signature tune, "We're an American Band. From that point on, the focus shifted from simply dishing out raw, loud rock. Their playing had gotten somewhat refined and the idea of pop singles was of major consideration. Expanding on the template set by Rundgren, Ienner took the band further away from their raw roots, adding horns and generally cleaning things up in the process. Responsibility" gets things going here with a genuine soul vibe.
