Anokha – Soundz of the Asian Underground is a compilation album. This 1997 album arose from the Anokha music club night, formed by its host Talvin Singh and Sweety Kapoor, with music producer/DJ State of Bengal . Anokha held weekly sessions at the legendary Blue Note venue at Hoxton Square in London's East End. The album was marketed by Mango Records, a division of Island Records. Those music sessions and this compilation helped to promote the rise of the Asian Underground movement.

Complete your Talvin Singh collection. This is the album that introduced the world to 2 of the biggest tracks in the Asian Underground scene. Talvin Singh's legendary 'Jaan' (featuring the sublime vocals of Amar) and State Of Bengal's drum & bass masterpiece 'Flight IC408'. On it's release most people did not understand this album. It was so different from what was around at the time. As a whole it's not a perfect album it has a couple of boring tracks, especially the out of place 'Distant God' & the rather mediocre 'K-Ascendant'.

The sound of the Asian Underground from London’s beating streets. Twenty years since the founding of the legendary Anokha sessions, pioneering tastemaker Talvin Singh chronicles the era with his ‘Anthology of the Soundz of the Asian Underground’. This beat-pounding mega-mix comprehensively twists together the entire history of the change-making musical movement. The Asian Underground scene harnessed the looping beats and visceral energy of 1990s rave culture then mixed it through with the multi-meter polyrhythms, kaleidoscopic melodies and shapeshifting microtonal modes of Indian music. His debut album OK (1999) won the Mercury Music Prize for Popular Music and the South Bank Prize for Popular Music. Today Talvin continues to DJ, compose and produce, ever expanding the sound of the Asian Underground in experimental new directions.

Asian Underground is a term associated with various British Asian and South Asian Canadian musicians (mostly Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan) who blend elements of Western underground dance music and the traditional Asian music of their home countries in South Asia. The first well-known mention was the compilation album Anokha - Soundz of the Asian Underground released in 1997 and masterminded by Talvin Singh and Sweety Kapoor.

From Talvin Singh's Anokha club comes the Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground compilation (featuring two of his own tracks). The album is a startlingly natural-sounding fusion of Indian music and instruments with drum'n'bass, breakbeats and electronics, unlike other electronic recordings which feature an abundance of styles but rarely approach true fusion. Besides the Singh contributions and the two tracks by State of Bengal, the highlight is "K-Ascendant" by Kingsuk Biswas (aka Bedouin Ascent).
