The Madrid Concert Orchestra Directed And Arranged By F. Moreno Torroba - Zarzuela - Themes From Light Spanish Classics album
Federico Moreno Torroba (3 March 1891 – 12 September 1982) was a Spanish composer, conductor, and theatrical impresario. He is especially remembered for his important contributions to the classical guitar repertoire, becoming one of the leading twentieth-century composers for the instrument. He was also one of the foremost composers of zarzuelas, a form of Spanish light opera. His 1932 zarzuela, Luisa Fernanda, has proved to be enduringly popular
Federico Moreno Torroba (1891-1982) was, along with Rodrigo, the great crowd-pleaser of Spanish music in the twentieth century. Known in the field of the operetta-like zarzuela as well as for guitar music, he cultivated an art that was recognizably Spanish without either coming deeply to grips with the flamenco substrate of Spanish music on one hand, or confronting Spanish music's relationship to France on the other. His music demands exactly the qualities furnished by the young Croatian guitarist Ana Vidovic: fluency, confidence, and a winning light lyricism. A promising beginning indeed to what appears to be a series of discs devoted to a somewhat neglected member of the fraternity of Spanish guitar composers.
Moreno Torroba is often associated with the zarzuela, a traditional Spanish musical form. Directing several opera companies, Moreno Torroba helped introduce the zarzuela to international audiences. However, he is probably best known for his compositions for the classical guitar, many of which were dedicated to either Maria Angélica Funes or Andrés Segovia. Operas by Federico Moreno Torroba. Federico Moreno Torroba composed about one hundred works for the guitar, thereby reinforcing his status as one of Spain's great twentieth-century composers. Homenaje a la seguidilla pays lively tribute to that characteristically Spanish song and dance, while the Tonada concertante is in turns playful and introspective. Concierto de Castilla features a free-spirited lyricism evocative of the folklore of Castile, a vast expanse in the middle of Spain with which the composer strongly identified.
The etymology of the name is uncertain, but some propose it may derive from the name of a Royal hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, where, allegedly, this type of entertainment was first presented to the court
