Eric Heywood, Mark Spencer from the Blood Oranges, and the rock group Canyon have often accompanied Farrar in his solo recordings and performances. Spencer is now a full-time member of Son Volt. In 2006, Farrar announced the formation of a new band, Gob Iron, with Varnaline's Anders Parker. The songs which would make up their debut album were recorded in autumn 2004, while Farrar was in the process of recording a new Son Volt album. Farrar collaborated with Ben Gibbard (of the indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie) to create all of the music for the soundtrack for the 2009 documentary film. Live in Seattle (2004). The download will feature 15 songs from "Sebastopol," ck," "The Slaughter Rule" soundtrack and "Terroir Blues," plus a version of Townes Van Zandt's "White Freightliner Blues. Backing Farrar are Eric Heywood of Son Volt and Mark Spencer of Blood Oranges. Another live album, this time in CD format, will also be released, tentatively in May, of Farrar's tour with Canyon.
Farrar took the time out for a quick chat with Paste about the impact of his best year ever in a time when the lines between alternative and commercial country music are blurrier than ever before with the success of acts like Eric Church and Kacey Musgraves. Just don’t ask him for his opinion on new music; he sticks strictly to the old stuff.
