The Pomp and Circumstance Marches (full title Pomp and Circumstance Military Marches), Op. 39, are a series of marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar. They include some of Elgar's best-known compositions. The title is taken from Act III, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's Othello: Farewell the neighing steed and the shrill trump, The spirit-stirring drum, th'ear-piercing fife, The royal banner, and all quality, Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war!
The Pomp and Circumstance Marches are played with more excitement than the Enigma Variations, but less than Bliss on the album with Mehta. Previn possesses too much refined reserve for my tastes. So between the two, who do you chose, Previn or Mehta/Bliss for these two works. I echo the same sentiments about the Andre Previn/Royal Philharmonic Orchestra being a superb recording of both Enigma Variation and Pomp & Circumstance. It is sad this CD is out-of-print. To compare this with another highly recommended in-print version by Sir Adrian Boult and Sir John Barbirolli conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra respectively, to my ears the performances on the Previn disc are vastly superior.
