Go right back to rave’s earliest days and you’ll find DJ Trace. A regular at the seminal churches of Rage and Telepathy, firing off big hardcore nuggets like Inception and Teach Me To Fly before he was 20, the Londoner named Duncan Hutchison then proceeded to work closely with two of the most influential jungle imprints of the time: Lucky Spin and No U-Turn where he and fellow pioneers such as Nico, Ed Rush. There was Syntax on the 23° From Vertical album and Pete Parsons and I did some 2D33P bits much later on but yeah I did slow my own productions down and got into helping other artists, bringing new people through. The thing about me and production was that I’d write a tune that did well and then think ‘how am I going to make a tune as big as Sonar?’ I got myself into that mindset and thought maybe I should stop making tunes and focus on helping artists. So I did and still do.

Until the digital world affectively opened the flood gates to endless remixes (have a look at the 2017 remix release for Marvelous Cains Hitman remixes if you can have a spare few hours!), the vinyl scene at least had a bit more restraint. Yet somehow Mutationz seems to have gone through about 10 remixes before the new millienieum was in more than its infancy. Ironically despite Kemals 'Munitionz III' remix coming only one release after another 4 remixes (including one from Konflict), its probably the best track on this LP. Personally I dont think thats saying much (no idea what JonnyMassacre has been smoking to think this at any time could be considered best album of all time), but hey each to their own.
Didn't realise it at the time, but listening to this again ... 11 years later ... I think this is one of the best D&B albums of all time. Every producer is taking the piss; well on top of their game. "Cannibal Run" is weird at first but once you get it you can't live without it ... such a smart evolution of tech-step. "Mutationz" remix sounds like Kemal at his best. "Uprock" is like nothing I've ever heard before - so simple, yet bearing the hallmarks of pros who're enjoying themselves. Special mentions also go to the excellent "Warp 2" and the harshest tramen I ever heard on "Syntax" ... and how could I forget "The Encrypter" by Kemal? This track is so disturbing one can only wonder what was going on in that man's head at the time, and, moreover, how the fuck he managed to funnel it into a computer so we could come along on his journey. It's delicate but disgusting, and extremely complex. Then there's "Black Monday" ... I could go on and on ...
