An incredibly good disc. Probably the best album heard this year. The samples on You Tube give you a great idea if you'll like it.As a fan of melodic psychedelia find the group and recordings fascinating. Highly recommend.By the way didn't expect such wonderful sound....GREAT!!

Dantalian’s Chariot was one of those bands who tried to walk in two worlds at the same time, to step out of the long time comfort of the hip R&B group the Big Roll Band, a popular live band since 1961, though never achieving much record success. Seeing that ‘the times were a-changin’ several of the band’s members broke up the group and dove headlong into the psychedelic scene. While many of the early R&B bands of the day were wearing matching suits, Dantalian’s Chariot did the same thing, thinking that they could psychedelicize their look by decking themselves out entirely in white, white outfits, white guitars, white amps, a white Hammond organ and drums, along with a blisteringly intense liquid light show. This light show was so intense and sophisticated that Pink Floyd were often known to use it many times. Even with all of this relentlessness in 1967, along with critical acclaim, the record company wanted to tone down their new found ideas and return to those of the Big Roll Band, by which time everyone threw up their hands and a mere one year later in 1968, Dantalian’s Chariot was no more,.With their single “Madman” having become highly sought after and prized by psychedelic collectors, people began wondering what had happened to the studio material that would have made up their formal album Transition. Finally pressed to vinyl around 1995, along with a compact disc containing bonus material, those who’d waited all these years, filled with anticipation, found that the album didn’t travel the heavy psych path rumors had generated for so many years. Instead what was delivered traveled a lighter path, much like the Strawberry Alarm Clock, filled with effects and affectations of backwards playing, lysergic narratives, and an endless array of eclectic meandering where the material, some better than others, came off disjointed, out of step as conceptual whole, and not quite the psych tour de force so many were expecting.Without a doubt while this is a most interesting collection of songs and ideas from a hazy time in musical history, Dantalian’s Chariot just weren’t the counter to Pink Floyd so many were hoping for, in the end, they were merely psych opportunists who laced together some bouncy trippy songs that come off much better in single play rotation than as an album to be listened to from beginning to end.*** The Fun Facts: Dantalian was a Duke of Hell, referencing “The Key Of Solomon,” The Key of Solomon is a pseudepigraphical grimoire attributed to King Solomon. It probably dates back to the 14th or 15th century Italian Renaissance. It presents a typical example of Renaissance magic, with the Key of Solomon inspiring later works, particularly the 17th century grimoire also known as Clavicula Salomonis Regis, The Lesser Key of Solomon or Lemegeton, although there are many differences between the books.George Money moved on to work with Eric Burton during his Los Angeles Animals period, pat Donaldson became part of the folk rock scene as part of Sandy Denny’s first incarnation with Fotheringay and toured with Richard Thompson, while drummer Colin Allen hooked up with John Mayall for his release Blues From Laurel Canyon and worked with Stone The Crows, while Andy Somers would change his name after a stint with Soft Machine, and go onto become one third of The Police.Review by Jenell Kesler

This is an excellent album. The liner note booklet is outstanding with many photos and lots of research about this band. HOWEVER, it contains one material error... The liner notes claim that this album contains ALL of this band's recordings. This is mostly true, but there is 1 "track" that is not on this record. It is a piece (not truly a "song") which was included in the Fred Marshall film POPDOWN and entitled "Soliloquy." It was a mess of improv music with Zoot shouting and screaming. They probably do not have this, as it was not recorded during the album sessions, but including it with these other songs would have been an odd choice anyway...
