So where have these Rasta dudes been during the 12 years since their last album? The liner notes don't give specifics, instead urging listeners to rejoice in the spicy mix of deep social themes (check out the heavy Bob Marley influence on the anti-racist anthem "Cover Up"), bright brass, and reggae grooves. Hailing from Southall in West London, the many-member Misty in Roots has undergone various incarnations in its more than two decades on the scene - yet the message remains the same.

The Southall West London roots reggae group Misty in Roots started out in 1978 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the hottest young bands around. The band, originally led by brothers Walford Tyson and Delvin Tyson (who has since drowned), went on to record sporadically in the '80s, typically fusing political and ecological lyrics with an authentic roots style similar to that of fellow Londoners Aswad. After a decadelong recording sabbatical, the band returned to active duty in 2001 and subsequently recorded six new tracks for the formidable Roots Controller compilation.

Misty in Roots, along with Steel Pulse and a few others, brought Rasta consciousness to the UK punk scene in the late 70s, sharing bills and ideologies with many white punk bands (the first release on their own label was by The Ruts). While Steel Pulse recorded regularly throughout the 80s and 90s, Misty preferred to gig more or less continually, despite problems and personal tragedy.

By 1978 Misty In Roots had their own orthodox roots sound with rastafarian lyrics, and started touring as a solo group. They were also a major force in the Rock Against Racism movement. Their first album Live at the Counter Eurovision 79 was recorded live in Belgium.
