Fritz Reiner's friendship with Béla Bartók must be considered an important factor in the creation of these legendary recordings. Koussevitsky's famous commission for the Concerto for orchestra was due in large part to Reiner's advocacy, and he was among the first conductors to both perform and record this masterpiece. The sound quality of the recording is generally excellent, especially with RCA's fastidious remastering.

Its singles did not reach the Top Ten, however, and Columbia again reached back, releasing 'Beginnings' (from the first album) backed with 'Colour My World' (from the second) to give Chicago its fourth Top Ten single.

The two other compositions on this CD are not too bad either. Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta premiered in 1937 and is one of Bartok's best-known compositions. It was commissioned by the Swiss conductor. Paul Sacher and is a brilliant piece of music. Stanley Kubrick used it in his film "The Shining. This recording was made in 1955 and 1958, however, the sound is still rich, full and clear. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Fritz Reiner, is superb.
