The Sanford/Townsend Band - Nail Me To The Wall album
The Sanford-Townsend Band was a rock and roll band from Alabama, United States. They scored a hit single in 1977 with "Smoke from a Distant Fire". The Sanford-Townsend Band featured keyboardists Ed Sanford (from Montgomery, Alabama) and Johnny Townsend (from Tuscaloosa, Alabama), who previously worked together in a Tuscaloosa-based band called Heart (not to be confused with the band of the same name fronted by Ann and Nancy Wilson from Seattle/Vancouver).
We've paired it with their 1979 album Nail Me to the Wall, which was released under the name Sanford & Townsend Band and makes its CD debut here; their final release, it didn't enjoy the same chart success as its predecessor but does offer the same studio-perfect, West Coast '70s pop. Gene Sculatti's liner notes and photos feature an interview with John Townsend, too! 1. Smoke from a Distant Fire 2. Moolah Moo Mazuma (Sin City Wahh-oo) 3. Oriental Gate (No Change of Changin' My Mind) 4. Shake It to the Right 5. Squire James 6. Does It Have to Be You 7. Lou 8. Sunsh.

Real Gone's 2012 two-fer pairs Sanford & Townsend's breakthrough 1977 debut Smoke from a Distant Fire with Nail Me to the Wall, their 1979 swansong. Their sophomore set, Duo-Glide, is skipped over, possibly because that 1977 LP saw a CD reissue in 2005, and Nail Me to the Wall had never seen the light of day prior to this. Smoke from a Distant Fire is the hit thanks to the groovy, swinging title track, about as perfect an illustration of the aural appeal of Yacht Rock that can be imagined, but even that doesn't quite illustrate the goofiness at the core of Sanford & Townsend. After all, the second song on Smoke from a Distant Fire is called "Moolah Moo Mazuma (Sin City Wahoo)" and the first on Nail Me to the Wall is "Gopher Broke," and that only hints at how comfortable with silliness this duo is.
