Seamus Egan - A Week In January album
Séamus Egan was born in Hatboro, Pennsylvania to Irish émigrés Mike and Ann Egan. At the age of three his parents moved the family back home to County Mayo, Ireland. He learned accordion from Martin Donaghue. In 1985 he recorded a solo album Traditional Music Of Ireland. In 1992 he joined Susan McKeown's band The Chanting House and appeared on a live album with them. Eileen Ivers was also a member of the band. In 1994 he founded Solas and has been on every one of their albums. In 1995 he recorded music for the quirky low-budget film The Brothers McMullen, directed by Edward Burns. A Week In January (1990). The Brothers McMullen (Soundtrack) (1995). When Juniper Sleeps (1996). Celtic Tapestry (1999). Three Way Street (1993).
Seamus Egan was born in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia, in 1969. His parents returned to Foxford, Co. Mayo five years later and it was here that Seamus - on hearing Matt Molloy - became interested in traditional music. Martin Donoghue from Ballindine was his teacher during those formative years. On returning to America he was fortunate to meet Mick Moloney, the folklorist and banjo player. Mick acted as a mentor, guiding Seamus in both style and repertoire. I was quite surprised not see this recording in here. Anyway, it’s a brilliant album. His flute playing is much wilder than that of Matt Molloy while I personally love the track 3, the set of Bobby Casey’s and the Congress Reel on the banjo. Posted by slainte 16 years ago.
Séamus Egan attained his greatest success as a solo artist with his soundtrack for Edward Burns' 1995 film The Brothers McMullen; it spent four months on the world music charts and included the Top Ten hit "I Will Remember You," recorded by Sarah McLachlan. Egan, however, has been an important presence on the Irish music scene for far longer. Egan continued to focus on his solo career as well, releasing his second solo album, A Week in January, in 1990. Although the Chanting House disbanded before recording an album, Egan joined with Ivers and Doyle and Kimati Dinizulu to record a track, "Ships Are Sailing," on Ivers' solo album Wild Blue. He continued work to periodically with Moloney and O'Donnell as well, reuniting to perform at Bonnie Raitt's wedding.

A Week In January by Seamus Egan. Slip Jigs by Seamus Egan. This album finds its feet essentially in Seamus Egan's captivating score. Sarah McLaughlan's track, albeit surreal, is in no way the "highpoint" of this album. This soundtrack showcases Seamus Egan's immense talent as a composer and juxtaposes it well with the film itself. A film about 3 Irish catholic brothers in Long Island trying to find a firm footing. The Second track "A week in January" opens with a rousing and well paced guitar laden track followed by a very traditional celtic ensemble. When Juniper SLeeps" and "Once upon a time" are two of the best tracks on the album. Touch that magical chord deep within. Cape Breton set, actually transports one of the north east canadian shores, of which the music is very remniscent.
