Primordial Lovers, Reprise 6377, is a 1970 rock album by Essra Mohawk. In 2000 the album was re-released by Rhino Handmade as a 22 track collection, combining the original album with a non-album single, "Jabberwock Song", and the 1974 follow-up album, Essra Mohawk. The original 1970 Reprise issue of the album included a 20-page booklet with the album's song lyrics. In 2010 the original album was reissued by Collector's Choice with five extra tracks.

Essra Mohawk has never recorded for the same record label more than once, but it's rarely affected the consistency of her songwriting. Here, she left behind the free-form, rambling qualities of her earlier work, and, working within slightly more conventional rock confines, rocked 'n' rasped her own inimitable way through ten finely crafted psych-pop gems, as well as one frenetic take on Gershwin's "Summertime. New Skins for Old" starts as the album means to go on: "Can we doubt when we don an old animal skin/that it's really a previous state.

Singer/songwriter Essra Mohawk (b. Sandra Elayne Hurvitz, Philadelphia, PA) is a performing songwriter and recording artist whose career encompasses a who's who of popular music. In addition to releasing several critically acclaimed solo albums, she has collaborated with Al Jarreau, Bonnie Bramlett, Al Stewart, Narada Michael Walden, and Keb' Mo'; provided background vocals for John Mellencamp, Jerry Garcia, and Kool & the Gang; and written songs for Cyndi Lauper and Tina Turner. In 1974, Mohawk moved to the Elektra/Asylum label, where she released Essra Mohawk. Two years later, the same fate greeted her fourth album, Essra, which appeared on Private Stock.

Essra Mohawk (born Sandra Elayne Hurvitz on 23 April 1948) is an American singer-songwriter who has recorded a dozen albums, many receiving critical acclaim, and penned the hits "Change of Heart" for Cyndi Lauper and "Stronger Than the Wind," recorded by Tina Turner. She is also a former member of Frank Zappa's The Mothers Of Invention.

Mohawk embraces new wave with iffy results on E-Turn. Sometimes, as on "You're a Mover" and "Let Her Know," the music holds its own against any of the best skinny-tie efforts of the era. But by track ten, the formula has been repeated too many times; it stops being fun, and gets a bit boring. The only richly melodic cut is "Silver Ships," which has the unfortunate effect of making one yearn for the unplugged Essra of earlier days. Amidst all the electronic knob twiddling, Mohawk's lyrical concerns are much as before, particularly on "Mankind,".
