From his album "Today!" (1966).

As quiet as it was kept then, Skip James might have made the best music of anyone who resurfaced during the mid-'60s "rediscovery" era for Mississippi country blues types. Certainly, there weren't many albums made during that time as good as this one; wonderful vocals, superb guitar and a couple of tunes with tasty piano make this essential.

Listen to albums and songs from Skip James. One of the first Delta bluesmen to be recorded, Skip James was an artist with a highly individual sound and a forceful, idiosyncratic personality that shone through his music. At the heart of his sound is the combination of his keening, mournful tenor voice and his complex guitar and piano playing. Like many Delta Blues artists, James played his guitar in an open tuning, and he matched contrapuntal moving lines to droning open strings in a manner that has not been imitated since his death.
