Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me album
BBC: The new album is called Devil And God Are Raging Inside Of Me. What does it mean? Jesse: I don’t think the title was meant specifically for one idea, but more that it touched on the band and also certain things that were evident when you listen to it. It really came from a conversation I was having with a friend about a musician who got an illness which has a certain level of paranoia and schizophrenia, and it leans towards a spiritual thing, a battle between good and evil which is intriguing. The phrase itself was pretty cool, and reading it somewhere else would be striking, so that was.
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is the third studio album by American rock band Brand New. It was released on November 21, 2006, through Interscope Records, making it their major label debut
But this embryonic version of Brand New’s third album was leaked by overzealous fans (and sold back to them a decade later), causing a disillusioned and emotionally violated Lacey to retreat inward again. By the time The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me was completed, he may have realized that the world didn’t revolve around him-but he was now the dark center of the universe, a howling spiritual void. Theology had always played an under-appreciated role in emo’s development. The Devil and God even sounds soulless. And yet the same cold, clinical production is responsible for The Devil and God’s unusual and appropriate atmosphere.

Contemplative, regretful and downright depressing, Brand New have created their magnum opus – and it’s absolutely breathtaking. A criticism often leveled at this album is its overarching sense of depression; this is not a happy record. Death, remorse, love and loss are all equally prevalent – and the unifying factor, above all, is sheer loneliness. It’s despondent, it’s bitter – but the themes, quite unlike this album’s successor Daisy, present themselves through reflection and self-analysis
With The Devil and God, Brand New surpassed these genres and, with that, the ways to listen to them by viciously cranking the volume and getting experimental, bringing theremin and strings into the mix. It raised the bar not just for listeners, but for the band themselves. With previous records, Brand New released singles after an album had dropped. With Devil and God, they allowed the label to release advance streams of Sowing Season (October 20, 2006) and Degausser (November 14, 2006). They performed on late night TV twice (Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Late Show with David Letterman). Changes in publicity were made, but the label knew what they were doing.
