Acclaimed author and musician Patti Smith teamed with Soundwalk Collective to record an upcoming album ‘Killer Road’ which honors Nico. When Smith gave a public poetry reading at St. Mark’s Church in February 1971, she invited Kaye to accompany her on the electric guitar for three pieces. Over the next two years, Smith continued to perform in plays and poetry readings; she also wrote for several rock magazines, published two volumes of her poems, and began contributing lyrics to the literary-minded metal band Blue Öyster Cult.
Horses is the debut album of American musician and poet, Patti Smith. Released in 1975 and recorded in the late Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studio, Smith’s debut is considered by many as the first true punk record released. Combining Rimbuad influenced lyrics and furious garage band rock, Smith opened the door for generations of musicians after her to rebel. Writers Allen Lanier, Chris Kenner, Fats Domino & 7 more. Most know Patti Smith first as a rock ‘n’ roller, second as an author and third as a poet. But it’s the latter that feeds the others infinitely more than they do it. For Smith, before there was rock ‘n’ roll there was poetry and a intense love of literature. As she puts it, she got sidetracked by music, and wandered down a path through which she could fuse her love of Rimbaud and the Beats with her adoration for Bob Dylan, Keith Richards and Jim Morrison. Listen to Patti Smith read the collection of poetry that would become Horses at a reading at Columbia University in 1975. And while there is no known recording of Smith’s first reading at St. Mark’s Church, there is a video of Smith doing a reading in 1975 at Columbia University with many of the same poems.
Patti Smith was in many ways the original punk rock chick. A ferociously inventive artist who was by turns political, inspired, overhyped and underrecognized, Smith came up in New York's fertile early '70s punk rock scene. She'd spent much of the '60s dabbling in the visual arts before she turned to poetry, teaming up with guitarist Lenny Kaye in the early '70s to produce spoken word pieces set to music. The collaboration eventually led to the formation of the Patti Smith Group.
Her career spans the length of about four decades, spawning 11 albums and countless poems. Smith is known as a forerunner of punk rock, fostering the development of many after her, including the highly influential band, The Smiths. Much like the modernist movement of poetry, punk rock was known for its deconstructive cultural elements. Backside Patti Smith Group – Wave.
