The Viola Concerto, Sz. 120, BB 128 (also known as Concerto for Viola and Orchestra) was one of the last pieces written by Béla Bartók. He began composing his viola concerto while living in Saranac Lake, New York, in July 1945. The piece was commissioned by William Primrose, a respected violist who knew that Bartók could provide a challenging piece for him to perform.
Bernd Alois Zimmermann (20 March 1918 – 10 August 1970) was a German composer. He is perhaps best known for his opera Die Soldaten, which is regarded as one of the most important German operas of the 20th century, after those of Berg. As a result of his individual style, it is hard to label his music as avant-garde, serial or postmodern. His music employs a wide range of methods including the twelve-tone row and musical quotation.

Johann Christian Bach (the so-called "London Bach" and youngest son of Johann Sebastian) was publishing symphonies concertantes in Paris from the early 1770s on. Mozart, acquainted with the Mannheim school from 1777 and probably not unaware of . Bach's publications, put considerable effort into attempts to produce convincing sinfonie concertanti. Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Bartók were all piano virtuosos.
Béla Bartók Béla Bartók. Viola Hwayoon Lee. Violoncello Lionel Martin. Violoncello Kian Soltani. By the age of 26 Krzysztof Penderecki had already received three awards from the Polish Composers Association for his works Strofy, Psalmy Dawida and Emanacje. This success, as well as the premiere performance of these works at the "Warsaw Autumn" and in Donaueschingen, quickly brought Penderecki international fame. Through his Saint Luke Passion, for which he was awarded the Kunstpreis from North Rhine-Westphalia and the Prix Italia, he achieved rare popularity among contemporary avant-garde composers
